Lisa & Mike, February 13, 2016

Lisa and Mike’s wedding day was a long time in coming.  They began (secretly) dating at the tender age of fourteen, breaking her parents rule of dating at fifteen.  They’ve hung on through thick and thin and they’re still as much in love as any couple I’ve ever seen.  The people surrounding them on their day were so familiar to each other that it was like celebrating with one big family.  I honestly wasn’t always sure who belonged to which side and it didn’t seem to matter.  I was really looking forward to this day and I wasn’t disappointed.  Everyone was so comfortable and relaxed.  Lisa’s mother didn’t bat an eye when I discovered a massive hole in my socks in the middle of the getting ready chaos and awkwardly asked to borrow a fresh pair.  (Note to future self:  Bring back-up socks!)

Luckily for Lisa and her love of winter, it had snowed a few days before.  The day itself was filled with gorgeous sunshine and plenty warm to stay outside in dresses until the sun set.  This was followed by an emotional visit at Mike’s father’s grave as the sun disappeared.  The genuine openness and vulnerability of these two was so clear and I appreciated being invited along to capture it.

The morning of the wedding, Lisa posted a beautiful message to Mike and perhaps it says more about the depth of their relationship than I can convey so I’ll let her say the rest:

We’ve been together for 2987 days, and I knew I was going to marry you since high school. However, frustratingly enough, people always told me that this day would never happen with you. “How could I marry someone I started dating at age fourteen?” Things would change, people change, and I was just young, dumb, and still in the “honeymoon phase”.”  She goes on, “Well, peeps, you were half right.  Things did change as we grew up and we went through life’s milestones. We as people changed, and we were/are young, and we definitely aren’t in the honeymoon phase – more like old married couple phase, but they were wrong in the aspect that these changes never affected how we felt for each other. At a young age we knew we were going to marry each other and that no one else was a more perfect match for us, and that I would say we only grew stronger as a couple as time went on. I have had you as a best friend through all the many joys in life and the struggles such as nursing school, my diabetes, home ownership, being incredibly poor, you going to school and becoming a journeyman, and most devastatingly of all losing your dad to cancer. We grew as individuals and grew as a couple, as a team. You have honestly helped me become the person I am today through your love and support. We beat the odds that were voiced against us through the years. Our story is ours and I wouldn’t change it for anything, and I am glad I met you so young in life and have had you there for me when I’ve needed it most.

Lisa and Mike, you are timeless.
