Julena & Eric’s Outdoorsy Wedding in the Battle River Valley

After many photo sessions and one wedding with Julena’s family already, I was so honoured to join them again for another wedding as Julena was married.  I arrived at the family home to find everyone in the midst of make-up and hair preparations, small children playing in the living room and admiring their flower crowns, and so many happy familiar faces.  This family is known for their DIY touches and these were elegantly sprinkled throughout the day, from the beginning to the very end.
Before long, overlooking the Battle River valley at MSW Farms, Julena and Eric exchanged their vows. There was plenty of laughter as they recalled their first date being interrupted by a parks officer but these two enjoy the unexpected.  The atmosphere involved plenty of sunflowers and soft shades of blue with rustic details and an outdoor tented reception. The weather cooperated with a break from the rain we’d been having and instead gave us a clear, sunny day and plenty of warmth.
We snuck out for photos of the bride and groom as the sun was disappearing and shot until it had disappeared beyond the horizon.  Eric had donned his cowboy hat and Julena her denim jacket with “Mrs. Jenkins” lovingly emblazoned on the back by her sister.
I truly enjoyed this relaxed day and my time with both of these families…and I hear Julena’s mother is excited to get started on scrapbooking the day with flourish.

Sonia & Caroline’s Cozy Elopement at Edmonton’s Rutherford House

Less than a week after we met up for their engagement session, Sonia and Caroline hosted their cozy and elegant elopement at the Rutherford House in downtown Edmonton.  They had traveled all the way from Hong Kong to be legally married in Canada, it was such an honour to be there and witness their love.  The day was intensely hot at the University of Alberta but the manicured gardens and historic backdrop of the Rutherford House more than made up for it. Just before ceremony was set to begin, these beautiful brides helped each other put in their veils, and then they were truly ready.

Their friends sprinkled in, one or two at a time, and gathered at the top of the banister.  Both Sonia and Caroline entered from opposite sides of the stairwell, guided by their mothers, and soon found themselves on the landing, face to face.  They were beaming.  The faces watching over the banisters were beaming too.

After many hugs and portraits with friends and family, we wandered the university grounds.  We had photographed their engagement session at the University of Alberta, so we naturally sought out our favourite spots for their wedding portraits.  The sunlight was so beautiful and the grounds were quiet.  We nearly had the place to ourselves and it was lovely to take a moment and a few deep breaths.

They’ve returned home to Hong Kong since, but we’ve stayed in touch.  Despite flooding in the city and busy days of work and regular life, Sonia and Caroline are so incredibly happy.  That’s the dream.

Rachel & Bryan’s Jewel-Toned Wedding in the Red Deer Area

When I first met Rachel and Bryan, I immediately noticed their love of all things geeky.  Rachel showed me her sapphire engagement ring – like Zora’s Sapphire from “Zelda: Ocarina of Time” – and I needed to befriend these people.

I know them so much better now and I can safely say that they are genuine, funny, and geekier than ever.  They are wonderful.

Their wedding day was filled with sapphire blue and the ceremony was held outdoors on the wedding island at Wolf’s Botanical.  It’s such a peaceful place and guests enjoyed the view as they strolled across the bridge onto the island.  Before long, Rachel and her father were crossing that bridge to where Bryan waited, beaming.  Ryder, their dog, was also in attendance and looked mildly concerned about all of the activity and people.  He did look sharp in his bowtie, though.

Of course, their bridal party was just as playful and they kept everyone laughing throughout portraits and straight on into the evening.  Rachel and Bryan’s first dance was a visual masterpiece, between the colourful lights, disco ball, and clouds drifting across the floor.  Seriously.  Scroll down if you don’t believe me.  By the time I left at the end of the night, everyone was still dancing up a storm and Rachel and Bryan were looking a little worn out, in a happy, best-day-of-their-lives kind of way.  It was a beautiful day..

Robin & Joshua’s Rustic & Relaxed Wedding at Folk Tree Lodge

Robin and Joshua are pretty chill.  That’s one of the first things I noticed about them when we first met.  Their dream wedding was a super relaxed day with their friends, playing yard games and chatting over beers, so that’s exactly what they did.  They found themselves at the Folk Tree Lodge near Bragg Creek, surrounded by log cabins and pine trees. Before long, Josh was standing in the trees, waiting to see Robin for the first time, just the two of them.  Robin quietly tapped Josh on the shoulder and when he turned around, both suddenly wore teary smiles.  They exchanged handwritten vows in the woods in dappled sunlight, holding hands and continuing to softly laugh and cry.

The ceremony was held overlooking a grassy field under the warm sun, kicked off by a T-Rex for their flower-girl.  (I’m serious.  She was amazing.)  As guests had gathered, they’d each been given wildflowers to keep until the end of the ceremony, at which point they were to pull off and toss the petals at the newlyweds.  At least, I think they were meant to toss just the petals but plenty of the bunches of full flowers were also tossed in.  No newlyweds were injured in the process – just surprised.

Yard games, beers, and relaxed conversation were the order of the afternoon.  Their dog, Arvid, napped in the shade nearby but stayed close enough to keep an eye on Josh and Robin.  The heat of the day began to fade by the evening, and a hot meal was welcomed by all in the reception tent.  One of my favourite details throughout the day were the subtle nods to their favourite geekdoms, including Star Wars, Studio Ghibli, and the Lord of the Rings.  Keep a sharp eye as you look through the highlight reel and you’ll see what I mean.

This was a day that I would do again anytime.  Robin and Joshua, I’m so honoured that I was invited to be there and wish you all the best.

Bailey & Dylan E-Session Except Make It Summer

What’s better than one engagement session in the middle of winter?  A mini engagement session in the middle of summer to follow it up.

Bailey and Dylan nailed their short and chilly engagement session early this year and we met up at their lush, green property to round things out.  They’ll be getting married in just a few days and I can’t wait to see it happen!  Keep that big green tree in mind because that’s exactly where they’ll be exchanging vows.  (I love a good before and after.)   Somehow, we were even treated to a giant rainbow without having to deal with the rain.  What a perfect evening.
